Confirmation 2022

What is Confirmation?

In most faith tradition in early to mid-adolescents, youth are encouraged to begin exploring their identities especially as it relates to God. In Judaism that time is the Bar-Mitzvah and for most Christian traditions it is confirmation. Like the Bar-Mitzvah, a youth who completes confirmation is seen as an Adult in the eyes of the church.

In the Christian Church, Confirmation takes on very different forms based on the faith community. For instance, in the Roman Catholic Church it is focused on doctrines and church teachings whereas in our tradition it is focused on giving youth time to explore their faith and ask questions, struggling with the deeper questions about God and themselves.

For us, confirmation is an act of covenant renewal that includes three parties:
  1. God who confirms a youth’s baptismal identity as a child of God: whether Baptism occurred in childhood; will happen before the confirmations class; or at the Confirmation worship service
  2. the youth who confirms their faith in Jesus Christ articulating who God is to them
  3. the congregation  who confirms the youth’s spiritual gifts for ministry.
The Goal of Confirmation

Our Hope it that by the end of the class the youth have a much deeper relationship with God because God is no longer an abstract concept, but a real part of their life.
